How to Sew a Simple Dirndl Skirt: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

A dirndl skirt is a full skirt with a gathered waist and a close-fitting waistband. This design originates from traditional German costume, making it a unique and charming addition to any wardrobe.

This is one of the simplest and cutest skirts to make, as the pattern pieces are just rectangles. It’s a fantastic beginner sewing project. I’ve made many of them, and they always become wardrobe staples.

The amount of fabric you need depends on your size. Refer to the cutting guide above to determine the required fabric. You will also need a 9-inch invisible zipper. If you prefer a standard zipper, we have a tutorial for that too!

Step 1: Lay your skirt pieces with right sides together and sew along one side seam, 5/8 inch from the edge.

Step 2: Sew a line of basting stitches a scant 5/8 inch from the raw edge. Use a long stitch length and do not backstitch. Leave the threads long and loose on each end. Pro tip: Sew an additional row of basting stitches for more controlled gathers. For help with gathering fabric, check out our tips for gathering fabric neatly.

Step 3: Gather the fabric by pulling one of the threads on each side of the skirt. Gather until the skirt is the same width as your waistband piece.

Step 4: Lay one waistband piece (the other will be the facing) on the skirt with right sides facing, lining it up with the raw gathered edge. Sew 5/8 inch from the raw edge to attach the waistband. Press the waistband up away from the skirt.

Steps 5-8: Insert your zipper, sew the remaining side seam, and attach the waistband facing using this really in-depth tutorial. If invisible zippers are intimidating, you can use a standard zipper with this tutorial.
