Dressmaking Tutorial: Sewing Ties and Belt Loops

We are so close to finishing our dresses! Today, we’ll focus on creating the ties. However, since some people prefer belting their dresses instead of using ties, I’ve included a belt loop tutorial as well. It’s time to sew both the ties and belt loops. Yay!

P.S. The colors in the photos may look different due to lighting, but it’s the same fabric that changes appearance in each picture.

TIES

Fold the ties in half widthwise with right sides facing each other. Sew 5/8 inch from the raw edge along one short end and the long end.

Clip the corners.

Turn the tie right side out using a pointing tool or chopstick (avoid scissors or knitting needles to prevent holes).

Press the ties.

Fold under 1/4 inch or more on the unfinished edge and press.

Place the ties on the back of the dress with the folded edge facing downwards, positioned as indicated on the pattern (typically over the waistline seam).

Sew in place, and you’re done!

BELT LOOPS

For the belt loops, the process is similar. Decide how many loops to make and their width based on your preference. I made three loops—one at each side seam and one at the centre back—to accommodate different belt widths.

This step is optional if you skip the ties.

Cut 3 fabric strips, each 2 inches wide and 3 inches long.

Fold each strip in half with right sides facing and sew 1/2 inch from the raw edge along the long edge.

Turn the loops right side out using a safety pin and press.

Fold under 1/2 inch on each raw edge and press.

Position the belt loops as desired and sew along the folded edges. Trim any excess fabric underneath.
